MCPS hosts a summit for girl’s mental health

On March 9, Montgomery County Public Schools will hold a Girls’ Summit for girls in grades 6-12 to explore a variety of mental health and self-care issues. The Summit will be held at Northwood High School in Silver Spring. The free event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

According to Girls’ Summit program sponsors, the program will offer attendees the “chance to network, participate in fun activities, learn valuable skills and enjoy a fashion show presented by White House Black Market celebrating diverse body types.” The event is open to everyone, regardless of their sex, gender, or gender identity.

Sophomore Ellie Seiler attended the first Girls’ Summit event in October, focused on girls in S.T.E.A.M. careers, and shared, “The program was so fun with tons of activities. It was a great way to learn more about women in S.T.E.M.” According to MCPS officials, the first event in October 2023 was a huge success with over 1000 girls in attendance, and they are expecting a similar number of attendees at the March event.

Workshops and sessions will cover topics including healthy relationships, dating violence, social media use, healthy eating, body image, self-harm, and suicide for students and their caregivers. Other activities include gardening, music therapy, and a panel discussion hosted by Fox 5 D.C.’s Ayesha Khan.
