B-CC’s football players jumped up and down while singing along to “Life Goes On,” by Lil Baby, on their yellow bus as it rolled down Montgomery Avenue on the way back to school after an electrifying 21-12 win at Walter Johnson (WJ) on Friday. “We had the speaker going loud. Everyone was hyped. It was just a really good experience,” Junior running back Gabe Eisler said.
The Barons had reason to be ecstatic after their big season opener. With a new coach and new starting quarterback, the team is hoping to build on last year’s historic season when the Barons made it to the State Quarterfinals for the first time in decades. Senior quarterback Danny Hahn transferred from Georgetown Prep and coach Matt Schwartzback moved over from Wheaton High School.
The star of the night was Eisler, who had two of the Barons’ three touchdowns, including a 7-yard rush with less than two minutes remaining that, with a 2-point conversion, put B-CC up by two possessions. “It was just a really good team effort up front. And we won the line of scrimmage, which really helped my run performance,” Eisler said.
B-CC’s fans were loving his performance, chanting “MVP” after he made a tackle at his other position, cornerback, on the Wildcats’ final drive of the game.
Showing that their playoff run last season was not a fluke, the Barons got out to a hot start Friday, scoring on their first drive with a 3-yard touchdown run by Eisler. There wasn’t another score until the third quarter when WJ started their drive at B-CC’s 32-yard line and scored a passing touchdown on their first play to tie the score at 6-all. It didn’t take long for the Barons to respond because on the first play of their next drive senior Lucas Scribner took an outside run 67 yards for a touchdown to propel B-CC to a 13-6 lead. After the Barons’ late score and a stop on WJ’s final drive, Hahn lined up in victory formation to seal the win.
“I know how badly they wanted this game. They worked all offseason up to this point, to this game, and they earned this win,” Schwartzback said.
In their next game, B-CC will face Winston Churchill at home on Friday, September 13.
