Nicki Minaj, a Trinidadian female rapper who has garnered worldwide fame, changed the rap game in the early 2010s. Not only was her music some of the first of its kind, but Minaj also took over a male-dominated industry. Her large fan base, whom she calls “Barbz,” grew up with Nicki Minaj, who wore neon wigs, sang controversial verses, and promoted being unique. However, recently, Minaj has been criticized for her support of President Donald Trump and transphobic beliefs.
Nicki Minaj wrote her first big hit, Super Bass in 2011. This new and upcoming artist served as a role model for many young girls and members of the LGBTQ+ community. Throughout her career, Minaj had the alter-ego, Roman Zolanski, a homosexual boy. From her performances at Pride festivals to her alter ego, Nicki Minaj became a major icon in the queer community.
However, the self-proclaimed “Queen of Rap” started to face intense backlash during the pandemic due to her controversial tweets about the coronavirus vaccine. Many believed that this rapper stepped out of line when posting medical advice to her young fan base. Despite her disputed takes, Nicki Minaj still found huge success with her album, “Pink Friday 2,” in 2023. She announced her “Pink Friday 2 World Tour” and packed arenas. For a few years, this took away the attention from her previous behaviors.
Following the 2024 election, Minaj was extremely vocal about her support for President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance. She appeared at Turning Point USA’s AmericanFest and received negative media attention after her extremely transphobic comment. Nicki Minaj stated
“Boys be boys.” Considering that her fanbase generously consists of members of the LGBTQ+ community, this heavily damaged her reputation.
B-CC junior, Christian Glover, a former fan of Nicki Minaj, stated, “I personally view her in a different light now, considering that the people who made her famous are being targeted by the Republican Party and Trump.”
Many Nicki Minaj listeners share that they feel torn on whether they should still play her music. While some completely cut her out, others continue to listen. B-CC Junior Sofia Rubin explained her choice, stating, “I continue to listen to her; there are some uncuttable songs. I think that if I were to stop listening to her, it would kind of show exactly what we don’t want, not listening to someone’s music just because they have different beliefs.”
Overall, Nicki Minaj has truly made a name for herself over the last fifteen years. From becoming the “Queen of Rap” and gathering a large community of LGBTQ+ listeners to speaking her widely disliked truth on political subjects and establishing herself as a MAGA supporter, Nicki Minaj fans continue to debate whether this rapper should stillbe listened to.
