Recently leaked photos, as well as reports from over six years ago, have led to allegations involving an inappropriate relationship between two NFL figures: New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel and NFL reporter Diana Russini.
Russini, a wife and mother of two children, has been married to her husband, Kevin Goldschmid, for over five years. Vrabel, similarly, is a father of two children and has been married for almost three decades. The now-viral images show the pair spending time at an Arizona pool, holding hands and embracing one another.
Before examining the recent pictures, it is important to revisit earlier images from approximately six years ago. At the time, Vrabel had been married for about 20 years and was coaching the Tennessee Titans. Although Diana Russini was not yet married, she had been in a long-term relationship with Goldschmidt, whom she later married in September 2020. In March 2020, Russini and Vrabel were spotted together in a bar in New York City. These earlier images resurfaced after the recent Arizona photos were released.
Now that recent pictures from both Arizona and 6 years ago in NYC have been released, questions have emerged about the nature of their relationship. Recently, further exacerbating the situation, she exclaimed, “I did things in Miami I haven’t even told my husband,” and “I’m married to someone average,” which reportedly aired on national broadcasts. Additional remarks suggesting dissatisfaction in her marriage and a potential divorce have also contributed to public discussion.
Now, let’s talk about what the subjects of this scandal have done and said since the pictures were released. Early on, Mike Vrabel said, “These photos show a completely innocent interaction and any suggestion otherwise is laughable,” according to The Today Show on NBC. Additionally, Diana Russini said, “The photos don’t represent the group of six people who were hanging out during the day. Like most journalists in the NFL, reporters interact with sources away from stadiums and other venues,” also from The Today Show. However, as public discourse surrounding the controversy has increased and the photos from six years ago resurfaced, Russini has reportedly resigned from her job at The Athletic, while Mike Vrabel has sought counseling, did not attend Day 3 of the NFL Draft, and stepped away from team activities to spend time with his family.
It seems like Mike Vrabel and Diana Russini have had a relationship outside of football for several years, although the full situation is still unclear. There are still many unanswered questions.
