When the puck dropped on October 17th at Rockville Ice Arena, B-CC’s ice hockey team knew they were in for a long season. A mere 112 days later, that very same Barons team skated off the ice after one of the most heartbreaking losses a team can endure, putting wraps on what felt like a never-ending season. For the Barons, the last nearly four months featured the lowest of lows, the highest of highs, and a few in between.
The team began its season with a disappointing 9-game skid, killing any momentum the team would have liked to create. The team struggled to score, boasting multi-goal games only twice during that span. During this stretch, B-CC’s lone goalie, Blake Schoenebeck, suffered a concussion, holding him out of three games, which featured 10-0, 10-1, and 9-0 losses.
In their first game back from winter break, the Barons faced Northwest and Quince Orchard (NWQO), one of Montgomery County’s weaker teams. This opportunity created some real momentum for the Barons, who put up a season’s best 7 goals. After a rough loss the following week against Wootton, the Barons added a second win to their record when they faced Upper Montgomery (Clarksburg, Poolesville, and Damascus) to wrap up their season. When looking back at the season, B-CC junior Leo Alley-Strocher cited this stretch as rock bottom for his team. “We had some issues where we dropped a couple of games by 9 [or] 10 goals, and it was looking really bad. Everyone was kind of down and [it] hit halfway through the season, so that was hard when you’re trying to get back into it.”
B-CC entered the playoffs as the 12th and worst seed. The underdog Barons faced Rockville and Magruder (RAM) in their first-round matchup, a game in which B-CC narrowly defeated RAM by a single goal. Fresh off a first-round bye, it was 4th seeded Sherwood’s turn to take on the now rolling Barons. The better part of the Sherwood matchup, B-CC looked completely outmatched, trailing by as much as three goals multiple times. Down 5-2 with around 8 minutes remaining, the Barons began a comeback attempt that fell short, ending their up-and-down season. Despite the disappointing end to the Barons’ playoff run, Alley Strocher had a positive outlook on the ending to B-CC’s season. “For us, being the 12th seed, the very last seed, being able to come out and fight with one of the best teams, like that. It’s pretty impressive.”
With a long offseason ahead, the Barons will have plenty of time to prepare for the 2026-2027 season.
