Maya Light is a Sophomore at BCC High School and is a swimmer on the BCC swim Team. Maya’s swimming journey began when she was just four years old and has since become a passion.
Unfortunately, Light suffered from an injury last year, preventing her from competing, but this year she’s excited to be back in the pool. For the B-CC team, she usually swims in the 200 or 400-meter relays, as well as the 50-meter freestyle. The relays require endurance and strong chemistry with teammates, which is something she values. The sense of unity has helped her perform successfully and reinforces the team’s supportive culture.
As a student athlete, Light has to find a balance between academics and swimming. Practices take place on Monday and Tuesday for an hour, which gives her enough time to focus on schoolwork. “The team motivates me during tough races or practices,” she said, adding that their team spirit makes a big difference. Behind all of her success, she has strong discipline and is recognized for her dedication throughout the season. Light explains how the team culture is very uplifting. No matter the outcome of the meet, they are fortunate to be doing what they love with a great support system. Light says, “We really have become a family because of it.” As the season moves forward, the bonds she creates with her teammates are ones that she will cherish forever.
