ROCKVILLE, MD – The new year kicked off to a great start for B-CC’s Ice Hockey team, which took down a combined team of Northwest and Quince Orchard athletes at Rockville Ice Arena on Friday evening. For a Barons team that has struggled mightily this season, the new year proved to be the fresh start the team has needed all season.
The first period was the calm before the storm, as an early goal from senior Peter Lanpher was the only item on the scoresheet after 15 minutes.
As the second period kicked off, NWQO’s Ethan Custodio notched an unassisted strike. B-CC quickly responded with goals from senior Ben Lyons and freshman Bryce Kaminsky just over a minute apart. Kaminsky’s was the first of his high school career. Shortly after, Custodio found paydirt once again, followed by another NWQO goal from George Mason to tie the game up at 3 heading into the third period.
Just over 2 minutes into the final frame, Lyons knocked in his second goal of the contest, giving his team the lead on what proved to be the game-winning goal. After an interference call on NWQO’s Andrew Isaacson, the Barons went on the powerplay. David High converted for B-CC on the man-advantage, extending the Barons’ lead. To put the final wraps on NWQO, Leo Alley-Strocher extended his team lead in goals with his 4th of the year, and High once again found the back of the net to make it 7-3 in favor of the Barons.
When reflecting on his team’s win, High remarked, “We were playing more as a team, and the passing was a lot cleaner.” Putting an end to a losing streak can do wonders for a team’s morale. “The first few games of the season, we were low energy and missing players, and now we have our full roster, and the energy is high, and we want to carry that into the next matches,” High says.
With only 2 games left in the season, the Barons will look to put a good end to an otherwise disappointing season. This Friday, B-CC will take on Wootton for senior night, once again at Rockville Ice Arena.
