On May 4, at around 3:30 PM, Secret Service officers shot and apprehended a man who appeared to be carrying a gun near the National Mall, just blocks from the White House. The man allegedly opened fire on Secret Service officers while attempting to flee the area. No Secret Service officers were injured during the exchange, but a 15-year-old was struck by the suspect’s gunfire, sustaining non-serious injuries. The White House was briefly placed on lockdown following the incident as officials secured the area.
The 45-year-old suspect, Michael Marx, a Texas resident, was taken into custody by police after being wounded in the exchange. His motives remain unclear; Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade passed through the area just before the suspect’s arrival, but he reportedly did not approach it. Nonetheless, the incident is particularly significant, coming less than a month after the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting.
