On Monday, February 9, 2026, shots rang out inside Thomas Wootton High School in Rockville, Maryland. According to police, there was an altercation between two students at about 2:15 PM, where one shot the other.
The victim, a 16-year-old boy, was rushed to the hospital and is in stable condition. Shortly thereafter, police apprehended a suspect, another 16-year-old, and discovered a 9mm handgun that they believe the student used.
The suspect is being tried, as an adult, for attempted second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault, and several firearm-related charges.
On Tuesday, a joint message from Board of Education President Grace Rivera-Oven and Superintendent Thomas W. Taylor expressed that, “We are heartbroken over Monday’s tragic event…This should never happen in a space dedicated to learning, growing, and community.”
In an update to the B-CC Community, Acting Principal Kevin Yates reaffirmed that safety was still his number one priority. Following this, he explained that security and admin teams will continue to be highly alert throughout the school.
