On Friday, January 19, B-CC students and staff held a debate during first period, arguing the controversial topic of generative artificial intelligence in schools. Seniors Maya Fritz, Cole Sevcik, and Avital Baer debated for the con side, along with Mr. Lopilato and Dr. Haupt. Whereas the pro side consisted of Seniors, Maxwell Dennis, Noah Grosberg, Simone Pulerwitz-Waisbord, and Seth Gehl. Mr. Lee also helped defend the pro side’s argument. Before the debate, the audience was asked to vote via a Google form to share their opinions.
The debate became heated as the sides argued against each other. The pro side argued that, rather than restricting its use, MCPS should teach students how to use generative artificial intelligence effectively. While the con side argued the opposite: MCPS should restrict its use and not teach students how to use generative AI effectively. Both sides made valid points, making it hard for the audience to choose a winner.
As the debate wrapped up, the audience was instructed to vote again after hearing both sides. The con side won as it moved the audience’s opinion the most compared to the pro side.
