As we kick into the second quarter, school instruction has extended far beyond the classroom for the Barons!
In Dr. Hogewood’s Comparative Religion course, the students trekked to Lanham, Maryland, to visit a Hindu temple and Mosque. They toured the sites and met with and learned from Hindu and Muslim leaders. They were educated about the various statues and gods in Hinduism and the prayers and hymns in Islam.
“It was a great experience! My favorite part was seeing all of the unique architecture. I was also able to try new food, like Turkish delights, which I really enjoyed,” said Senior Claire Daignault.
Dr. Hogewood, longtime teacher at BCC, has been taking his students on some variety of this field trip for 15 years. “I think it is an excellent opportunity for students to get a chance to experience other religions where they probably won’t ever get a chance to do that again in their lives,” Hogewood said.
Additionally, BCC’s own Chamber Singers and Jazz and String ensemble went on trips this week to three feeder elementary schools to put on performances. They visited Rock Creek Forest Elementary, Bethesda Elementary, and Westbrook Elementary. It is a part of their community outreach and recruitment initiative.
This trip is full circle for many Baron performers, who remember when older students visited their elementary schools when they were younger. “I remember B-CC students coming to NCC when I was young and I think they definitely had an impact on my love for music today. Now that I am that person, I hope that I can serve as a similar role model for the kids,” said Senior viola player Maya Jones.
