As of the beginning of the school year, a new policy at B-CC now requires students to show their student IDs when entering the school building.
Security guards and administrators can be seen standing at the main and East-West Highway entrances of the school from 7:30 to 7:45 and at the end of lunch to check students’ IDs as they enter the building. Temporary student IDs were handed out to students in homeroom during the first week of school to be used until students get their real student IDs.
The idea of this new rule is to try and prevent non-B-CC students from entering the building during school hours. In an incident reported by the Tattler in December of last year, two B-CC students let three teenagers into B-CC. Two of these teenagers did not attend B-CC. They proceeded to physically assault a B-CC student in one of the bathrooms.
B-CC students are not the happiest about these policies. “It’s really sad that we must go to such lengths to ensure the students are safe,” said Senior Claire Campbell. Another B-CC senior, Pepper Margulis, added, “I’ve gotten back to school 10 minutes early from lunch, and I’ve still been late to 5th period because I have to wait in line to show my ID.”
A B-CC security guard, Megan Sheeler, weighed in, “I am 50 50; I understand why we have to do it in this generation, but when I know a student’s face it seems less needed.” AP Bio teacher Ms. Mey said, “I think it’s great that they’re doing it, making sure that everyone who is supposed to be here is actually here.”
