As the leaves start to fall and Halloween nears, spooky movies are coming back in season. Heartwarming classics, horror flicks, holiday specials, and more are filling up television screens throughout the country. These festive films are an important part of fall traditions by providing nostalgia, laughs, and screams to countless viewers. So, what are Barons watching this spooky season?
Scary movies are a perfect way to get into the Halloween spirit during this fall season. From vintage classics to newer thrillers and everything in between, these films are a beloved way to get your heart racing and blood pumping. The horror industry’s popularity first truly debuted in the 1920s, with original classics like “Dracula” and “Frankenstein.” Later on, in the 1970s and ’80s, scary movies boomed in popularity with the introduction of slasher films such as “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” and “Halloween.” Since then, horror films have been on a roll, finding their way into the hearts of many thrill seekers. B-CC junior Sara Gonzalez shared her favorite film for the spooky season: “[Nightmare On] Elm Street and I Know What You Did Last Summer.”
However, not everyone is looking for a fright. Many people prefer the more heartwarming or silly movies that also reappear around Halloween. Family-friendly movies like “Hocus Pocus” and “Halloweentown” incorporate both humor and spookiness to put viewers in a Halloween mood without inducing any screams of fear. Specials like “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, and Casper Saves Halloween” are also great for sparking nostalgia and getting in the festive mood. Films that lean more towards the funny, heartwarming side of the fall season’s spectrum are great at provoking laughs, frights, and fun, all while allowing viewers to immerse themselves in a Halloween world. Pia Wise, a junior at B-CC, stated, “I really like ‘Hocus Pocus,’ very nostalgic. I also like ‘Nightmare Before Christmas and The Addams Family.’”
These movies are a huge part of autumn and Halloween culture and have become part of traditions for many people across the country. Whether you are looking for a goosebump-causing fright or a light-hearted laugh, Halloween movies — old and new — are great for helping people of all ages get into the spirit of the season and all the spooky fun that comes with it.
