On Monday, September 29, 2025, Girls’ varsity soccer went head-to-head with Whitman in the anticipated Battle of Bethesda. The rivalry between B-CC and Whitman goes back years, primarily through sports.
Before the game started, the girls knew it would be a challenge, both mentally and physically. As the game began, it was clear that it would be difficult, but the Barons knew what they had to do to succeed.
Claire Yonly is a junior captain at B-CC and has been playing with the Barons for the past three years. Yonly made Varsity as a sophomore and plays right wing; she is an integral part of the right offensive team. The junior captain shared her thoughts on how the game went for the team and as an individual, saying, “We had a good game. We had some good moments on the attacking side, but it was hard to break through and score. Personally, I think I played well. I had some good 1v1s and crosses, but wasn’t able to score.” After 80 minutes, the team began preparing for overtime. “It was crucial to stay active mentally for the whole 100 minutes. Physically, we were the most aggressive team and dominated with possession of the ball.”
The Battle of Bethesda has always been an important part of the season, partly because of B-CC’s rivalry against Whitman, but also because the winning team receives a trophy. “Whitman is a very strong team, but so are we. Both of us came into the game wanting to compete. At the end of the day, we weren’t able to score but held a shutout. We definitely wanted it more than them, and that was shown through our possession and opportunities,” Yonly stated.
Last year, the Barons suffered an upsetting loss against Whitman, losing 3-0. “We improved from last year. We spent a lot of time preparing and focusing on where we can improve. We are also an especially close team, and we set goals at the beginning of the season. And this was an important match for all of us.”
Even though the Barons didn’t achieve the outcome they were hoping for, they still played an excellent game. The game ended in a tie, with the scoreboard reading 0-0. The Barons fought hard until the end. Now, they wait for the day they see Whitman in the playoffs to dominate the field.
