On Tuesday, September 9, the Barons Cross Country team competed against Whitman in their first divisional meet of the season. This was also the team’s senior night, as it’s the only time the team will compete on their home course in 2025. Both B-CC teams came in with high hopes after going undefeated in divisional matchups in the previous year, and these expectations were more than exceeded.
A cross-country race is scored similarly to golf, with the lower score winning. Each of the first five runners for each team earns points corresponding to their finishing place — first place earns one point, second place earns two points, etc. The scores of each runner are added together to determine the team’s total score. Additionally, a team’s sixth and seventh runners can impact the race by finishing ahead of the top five runners for the opposing team, decreasing their points.
Both the girls and the boys’ teams ended up beating Whitman by a score of 15 to 50, which is the best possible score in a race, a perfect sweep. On top of that, the girls’ team ended with 18 finishers in the top 20, leaving Whitman in the dust.
With such a convincing victory, things are looking great for this year’s cross country team. If the Barons can keep this up, there’s no doubt that they could make a convincing state title run for the second year in a row.
