In recent years, social media has popularized the concept of a “Song of the Summer”. These songs act as soundtracks to the summer, commonly used as background music to videos, pictures, and warm memories. According to streaming data, past Songs of the Summer have been “Last Night” by Morgan Wallen in 2023 and “Birds of a Feather” by Billie Eilish in 2024. These songs both topped the charts during their respective years and became core elements for many during the summer season. Songs of the summer are diverse in genre, artist, and release date, with old songs often resurfacing and new hits gaining popularity. As they play on repeat throughout the summer, these songs become easily memorized and nearly impossible to forget.
Social media arguments often spark over which song is the new Song of the Summer and which are simply overplayed. According to Spotify, the top songs of summer 2025 include “Love Me Not” by Ravyn Lanae, “Rock That Body” by The Black Eyed Peas, and “Back to Friends” by Sombr.
In a random survey, BCC students were asked which of these songs was their favorite 2025 Song of the Summer. Twelve students responded that “Love Me Not” was the “song of the summer” while eight students liked “Rock That Body” the best. No students believed that “Back to Friends” deserved the title of “song of the summer” but some anonymous students shared their own personal recommendations like “Work From Home” by Fifth Harmony and “Seabird” by Innovations.
Songs of the Summer, although unique in their own ways, all share one thing in common; their ability to encompass the whole season through just music.
