In a new building, with new teachers, new classmates, and a different schedule, freshmen are trying to discover what it truly means to start high school. The first week at B-CC can produce a mix of emotions, especially for freshmen, as they are still adjusting to their new school. There are lots of new opportunities, and for many, it takes time to transition from middle school. Many ninth graders were interviewed to see how they are adapting to this significant change, gauge their impressions so far, and understand their goals for the year.
Question: How has your first week been?
Sara Zubrensky: “My first week has been sort of stressful with work, but it’s fine!”
Brooke Trabert: “My first week has been going well, but it’s definitely stressful trying to find my way to each class. It’s also getting overwhelming since we are already starting to do work in classes.”
Isaac Nigussie: “It’s been good since the teachers haven’t been assigning too much homework.”
Henry Kessler: “It has not been great because the classes are confusing and it’s hard to find my way around the school.”
Question: How does high school compare to middle school?
Sara Zubrensky: “So far, high school seems a lot more stressful academically, but a lot more fun socially!”
Brooke Trabert: “So far, I like B-CC better than middle school because in high school, there are so many different clubs and teams to join!”
Isaac Nigussie: “It has way more freedom, but it’s less focused on you since there are way more people. It is also probably harder.”
Henry Kessler: “It is much more difficult and confusing, and I have found it to be much more stressful since it counts towards college.”
Question: What are you most excited about this year?
Sara Zubrensky: “I’m excited to experience high school things that we don’t get in middle school, like football games, homecoming, and having open lunch.”
Brooke Trabert: “I’m super excited for homecoming! Also, I can’t wait to watch the football games with my friends!”
Isaac Nigussie: “I’m excited at the chance to be around my friends and explore new options.”
Henry Kessler: “The open lunch because I want to eat lunch outside with my friends!”
Although freshmen have mixed feelings about starting this new chapter of their lives, it seems that they are off to a great start so far and are looking forward to the rest of the year!
