MCPS is implementing a significant boundary change that could affect where B-CC students attend school. The rezoning is due to the reopening of Charles W. Woodward High School in North Bethesda and the construction of Crown High School in Gaithersburg, both of which are scheduled to open in 2027, and the expansion of Damascus High School.
The Woodward High School boundary study area will impact local high schools including B-CC, Walter Johnson, Walt Whitman. No boundaries are yet final, but certain proposals would reassign neighborhoods within the B-CC community. One of the more controversial proposals, Option 3, would create odd Islands where a portion of Rosemary Hills could shift to Walt Whitman HS, a part of Southeastern Wheaton could shift and join B-CC, and a section of Chevy Chase may be moved to Montgomery Blair HS.
Many students have younger siblings that may now not go to B-CC. Senior Jeronimo Castaño and his older brother (B-CC class of ’24) both went through B-CC. Now, their younger sibling might now go to a different school. Castaño said, “It is really unfortunate that my younger sibling might not go to B-CC, because most if not all of her friends will go to B-CC, while she is going to be deprived from going to school with them. I also believe it’s really unfair that my brother and I got the privilege to go to B-CC where the offer the International Baccalaureate and she is not going to have this opportunity because of the redistricting.”
The proposed redistricting wouldn’t go into effect until the 2027-2028 school year. There have been no final decisions made, but MCPS has presented many boundary maps that take into consideration diversity, proximity, and enrollment rates.
