For the 2025-26 school year, MCPS has implemented a number of new rules and policies. One change of particular import is the new safety protocols.
Among these new safety protocols is the Parent-Child Reunification process, or PCR. PCR is designed to reunite children with their parents in the event of a crisis, either on or off campus. Students must listen carefully to staff instructions throughout the process and wait patiently until the staff dismisses them. Guardians are required to bring a valid photo ID to ensure that they are the legal guardian of the child involved in the PCR. This will help to make sure that the children are safely reunified with their guardians in the event of a crisis.
Another new safety precaution that has been implemented is the “Drop, Cover, and Hold!” policy, which will be used in the event of an earthquake. During this drill, students and staff must remain where they are and must stay inside. The first step is to drop to the ground immediately, then take cover under a sturdy desk or table, and finally, students and staff should hold the shelter until shaking stops.
The final safety protocol, which is particularly relevant to students at B-CC due to the several incidents that occurred last year, is called a “Secure.” The introduction of the Secure comes alongside a redefinition of the term “Shelter,” which is now used exclusively for weather events. The Secure protocol is intended for external threats outside of the school. During this drill, all students and staff are brought inside, all external doors are locked, and classes continue as usual.
