Held every 4 years, the Maccabiah Games, often called the “Jewish Olympics” are the highlight of summer in Israel. This year, from July 1 to 22, over 10,000 athletes from around the world will compete for the medals in a celebration of unity, athleticism and competition.
Originating in 1932, the Maccabiah Games are open to Jewish and Israeli athletes of all ages and abilities, with divisions for juniors, seniors (open), masters, and athletes with disabilities. Representing over 80 countries, making it the third-largest sporting event in the world, following only the Olympics and FIFA World Cup.
Much like the Olympics, the Maccabiah Games feature all 28 Olympic sports, while also including unique competitions such as chess, cricket, and netball.
This year, BCC Juniors Sasha Ingber and Raquel Lovinger will proudly compete for Team USA in volleyball and soccer, respectively in the U18 category. “I heard about the Games through my family because some of my cousins and my dad played in past years and they thought it would be a great opportunity,” said Ingber.
For Jewish teens like Ingber and Lovinger, the Maccabiah Games offer more than just athletic competition. It’s a once-in-a lifetime chance to travel to Israel, meet fellow Jewish athletes from around the world, and deepen their cultural identities.
As the countdown to the 2025 Maccabiah Games begins, the excitement builds, as we wish our B-CC athletes the best of luck in representing Team USA!
