CORRECTION FROM PRINT: In our most recent print issue, The Tattler published an article that detailed electives no longer on offer to B-CC students due to low student registration. The courses listed as slated for removal included Latin American History, LGBTQ+ Studies, Stage Design, Website Development, Advanced Web Tools and Digital Media, Music Technology, Advanced Acting, Play Directing, AP African American Studies, and Holocaust Studies. However, AP African American Studies and Holocaust Studies were listed in error. They have reached the enrollment threshold and will run in the 2025-2026 school year.
Around December, every year, class registration begins, and students have the opportunity to pick classes that suit them. However, some proposed classes never end up getting taught. This year, some classes did not meet the minimum requirement for registered students, and therefore, they will not be available to take in 2025-2026. Assistant Principal, Dr. Goodwin, who tackled the complex task of course assignments and teacher scheduling for next school year, said, “If the student’s interest isn’t there, we can’t justify running it.”
Ms. Cameron, who has taught the LGBTQ+ Studies elective since it was approved to become a part of B-CC’s curriculum in the spring of 2021, stated,“Well, it’s the only class that is LGBTQ+ focused,so there are a lot of topics that we just don’t get to in the general history. I know I’ve tried to bring in a lot more of that into the world in the U.S. history classes, as [have] other teachers. But there’s a lot that just doesn’t end up making it into the full classes.”
Many of the cancelled classes for next year give opportunities to build career skills in areas such as website development or music technology. Other courses, such as Latin American History, and , provide a deeper, enricheLGBTQ+ Studies look into topics that are often glanced over or omitted in a standard curriculum.
While these courses are off the docket for 2025-2026 at B-CC, they may reappear in subsequent years, should there be more student interest in the future.
