The contest consists of three categories: personal essay, poetry, and short story. In the personal essay category, Olivia Ullman’s work, Man or Bear, was awarded first place, while Alan Mullen’s essay, Piebald Stags, won second, and Elroe Feyissa’s Erased won third. In the poetry category, winners included Zainab B. Faal’s 17,498, Sawyer Galimova’s Self-portrait with Loose Laces, and Flair Doherty’s One Day I Will Not Be 16, respectively. Finally, for the short story category, Fatima Faal earned first place for her story, Fireworks, Asha Vatave’s story, A Woman, received second, and At the End of Purple, by Finley Hatzfeld, came in third place. The Chips staff, along with B-CC’s English teachers, selected the finalists who were judged with the help of The Writer’s Center in Bethesda. Teachers and staff were in attendance to support and honor all who worked hard for these accomplishments.
