The B-CC Varsity Baseball team got knocked out of the playoffs by Walter Johnson on May 10 in an exciting game that ended with a walk-off passed ball, giving the Wildcats a 6-5 victory in the seventh inning.
Before facing WJ, B-CC needed to defeat Gaithersburg in the first round of the 4A West II regional playoffs. They succeeded, winning 11-5 after seven innings on Thursday, May 8. The standout player for the Barons was senior captain Trent Lopez, who had an impressive performance, contributing five RBIs with a two-run home run and a bases-loaded triple, just a double short of batting for the cycle.
In their away game against the Wildcats, the Barons fell behind early, giving up four runs in the second inning. They needed a strong rally to keep their playoff hopes alive. The comeback began when senior Will Adkinson hit a solo home run, putting the Barons on the scoreboard. With this big swing, Adkinson made history by setting the school record for the most home runs in a single season with six. Later, in the fourth inning, B-CC scored four runs to take the lead, with a key highlight being a two-run double by Lopez. In the final inning, just three outs from victory, disaster struck for the Barons. The half-inning was characterized by a hit batter, an error and the final blow — a passed ball resulting in the winning run and sending the Wildcats into a frenzy. This result propelled Walter Johnson to their third region title game in the past four years.
For nine B-CC seniors, this loss marked the end of their high school baseball careers.
“Baseball has been the cornerstone of my high school experience,” senior Tyler Prendergast said. “Whenever I think back to a time, baseball was always a part of it, whether in the forefront or just in the background, it’s helped me grow. I’ve made many new friends, and it’s also been a great place to be because of Coach Brilliant. He’s mentored me and been by my side all four years; I will sorely miss him.”
