After months of campaigning and connecting with students across the county, Anuva Maloo, a junior at Montgomery Blair High School, has been elected as the 2025-2026 Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB).
The election, held on April 23 via electronic ballot, was open to all MCPS students. More than 61,500 students participated, with Maloo securing 62% of the vote. Her opponent, Peter Boyko, a junior at Northwest High School, received 38%.
Maloo will succeed current SMOB Praneel Suvarna, a senior at Clarksburg High School, becoming the 48th student to hold the position. Her campaign centered around five key pillars: mental health, infrastructure, safety and necessities, education, and representation and equality. She ran under the slogan, “It’s time for ANU-change!”
Committed to community involvement and leadership, Maloo has served as her school’s class president and workshop deputy for the Montgomery County Regional Student Government Association. She also founded and leads the NEC and DCC Advocacy Coalition (NDAC), and serves as outreach director for the Yellow Foundation, an international nonprofit focused on supporting youth living in poverty.
Maloo’s term will begin on July 1, 2025. Students can follow her platform and initiatives on Instagram at @anuva4smob or visit her website at anuva4smob.com.
