This week’s upcoming games against some of the Baron Army’s rivals set high stakes for some of the biggest regular-season matchups.
On April 2nd and April 4th, the Barons faced off against what many consider two of their toughest rivals. These games carried extra weight this year, especially after last season’s disappointing losing streak. The week got off to a rocky start, as their March 31st game against rivals WJ was delayed due to weather. Only four minutes of play occurred before the game was paused due to stormy conditions, with B-CC up 2-0. It’s currently unclear whether the score will carry over into the makeup game. With that setback in mind, the Barons turned their full focus to their upcoming battles against Whitman and Churchill.
On Wednesday, April 2nd, the Barons took on the Whitman Vikings in the Battle of Bethesda. It was a hard-fought match, but unfortunately, B-CC came up short. After a rough start, they were already trailing 2-0 at the end of the first quarter. Despite the early deficit, the Barons came into the second quarter fired up and ready to fight. They amped up their aggression and began taking more shots.
“Gaining possession is something we have really been trying to work on, and a lot of that comes from being more aggressive on the field,” said junior Addison Foist.
Their effort paid off with a powerful goal by sophomore Juliet Kelliher, putting B-CC on the board with five minutes left in the quarter. The Vikings continued to challenge B-CC’s defense, but the Barons responded with grit. The crowd roared as the intensity rose. Sophomore Phoebe Kramer and senior McKenna Harper each scored just before the end of the quarter, bringing the Barons within two. At halftime, the score stood at 3-5, with B-CC pushing for a comeback.
Despite their efforts, Whitman regained control and landed two more goals, stretching the lead to 3-7 at the half. In the second half, B-CC held strong on defense and added two more goals, but ultimately fell short. The final score was 5-7 — a tough loss in the Battle of Bethesda.
Fortunately, the Barons were able to regroup and deliver in their next game against the Churchill Bulldogs. Right from the opening whistle, the intensity was clear. Churchill applied early pressure, but B-CC’s defense held strong, quickly regaining possession. Senior McKenna Harper struck first with a quick goal. Churchill responded with one of their own to tie the quarter.
B-CC took control in the second quarter, with freshman Phoebe Kramer, junior Grace Krupinski, and sophomore Juliet Kelliher each scoring to give the Barons a three-goal lead. Churchill answered with two goals before halftime, narrowing the gap to 4-3.
The Bulldogs came out strong in the second half and tied the game early. The Barons responded with tough defense. The energy on the field was electric, with players communicating loudly and parents cheering from the stands. Junior Maddie McManus nailed a crucial goal, followed by another quick possession and offensive push.
In the final minutes, the Barons fought to hold their lead. As the clock ticked down, the team and fans counted every second. When the final whistle blew, B-CC had secured a thrilling 7-6 win.
Now, with momentum on their side, the Barons look ahead to their makeup game against WJ, hoping to keep the wins rolling.
