After last year’s season-ending loss to Quince Orchard in the regional semifinal round of the playoffs, B-CC Varsity Baseball, under new head coach Andrew Brilliant, bounced back with a 5-4 victory through six innings in the Barons’ home opener.
Junior Alex Butler delivered the standout performance of the afternoon, driving in four of the Barons’ five runs. Most notably, he launched a three-run blast that cleared the left-field fence, giving the Barons an early lead. He later added an RBI on a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing junior Jayson Cohen to tag up from third and score.
“It felt great to get that [homerun], especially since QO knocked us out of the playoffs last year,” Butler said. “As I was rounding the bases, I was fired up and thinking about what this win would mean for the team.”
B-CC extended their lead to 5-0 after senior Will Adkinson’s RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning. Senior captain Trent Lopez was able to score on the play after leading off with a double. Adkinson also impressed on the mound, pitching five strong innings, allowing just one earned run while striking out six. The only run given up came from a home run that barely cleared the outstretched hand of senior Tyler Prendergast in right field at the start of the sixth and final inning.
Quince Orchard rallied in the last inning, scoring four runs to bring them within one, before senior Mack Lieberman came in for the two-out save, shutting the door to secure the victory for B-CC.
The Barons returned to action Thursday night on the road against Albert Einstein, with Prendergast taking the field on his birthday. B-CC dominated, cruising to a 16-3 win through seven innings.
