“I felt kind of satisfied because I achieved a lot more than I thought I would,” senior Dajorn Smith said after wrestling in his final high school wrestling match. “I was not even going to wrestle in the first place, so it was a good surprise to me.” Smith was one of five senior Barons who wrestled in their final high school matches at the state championships last Saturday, March 9.
Eight B-CC Varsity wrestlers competed, and three of them earned placements: senior captain Ethan Makle finished in third in the 132-lbs division, Smith placed fifth in the 215-lbs division, and senior Efrata Mekene secured sixth place in the 130-lbs division.
Makle, who achieved his highest placement at the individual state championships, lost in his semifinal match to Andrew “Stone” Yuen by a score of 15-11. Yuen, who ultimately won the state championship, was also the person who handed Makle the first loss of his career back in second grade. This match marked the last loss of Makle’s high school career, as he is set to graduate this June.
Smith concluded the season by going 5-2 at the state championships, while Mekene finished hers with a record of 4-3. This was the first time that either of them placed at the high school state championships.
