Following an 8-6 season, the B-CC Barons Squash team traveled up to Philadelphia to take part in the U.S. High School Nationals.
“The tournament was a chance to show everything that we have worked on throughout the season and demonstrate the improvements we have made,” said Senior Captain Alex Woodworth.
On Friday, February 21, the Barons competed in the first round, defeating Avenues The World School, a private school system in New York, 4-3 to advance to the semifinals.
The following day, the team narrowly lost to Millbrook, another New York private school. This loss sent the Barons to the consolation tournament, where they struggled to gain traction. They suffered back-to-back defeats and were sent home early.
Both Woodworth and Senior Captain Miles Vengrin played hard throughout the weekend. Woodworth battled illness to play, but his effort paid off: He won two out of the three individual matches he played in, despite the team’s late struggles.
“I found energy out of my love for the team and sport to push through,” said Woodworth.
