On February 6, NYT bestselling author and educator Dr. Bettina Love spoke at B-CC. Dr. Love shared her personal story, inspired students to create change in their communities, discussed strategies to bring joy back into education, and highlighted the importance of culture. The event was organized by B-CC teachers Mr. Louis, Mrs. Brown-Louis, and Ms. Young in partnership with B-CC’s Equity Justice Initiative, Walt Whitman’s Leadership Academy for Social Justice, and Blair’s African American Studies Academy.
During her talk, Dr. Love asserted, “We will organize, we will strategize, we will fight, we will keep going.”
Dr. Love is the William F. Russell Professor at Teachers College, Columbia University, and the acclaimed author of the New York Times bestseller “Punished for Dreaming: How School Reform Harms Black Children and How We Heal.” This groundbreaking book earned her the prestigious Stowe Prize for Literary Activism and made her a finalist for the LA Times Book Prize. In recognition of her commitment to fostering inspiration, inclusivity, and compassion, Dr. Love was named one of the Next 50 Leaders by the Kennedy Center in 2022. In 2024, she received the Truth Award for Excellence in Education from Better Brothers Los Angeles and The Diva Foundation.
