B-CC Varsity Wrestling’s home opener was spoiled after a tough loss against Damascus on Wednesday, which ended with a final score of 41-37. Both teams forfeited one of their wrestlers, causing the dual to be a thirteen-wrestler affair.
For this match, B-CC decided to try a new strategy where the first five Barons would wrestle in a higher weight class. This approach was intended to minimize their losses following the injury of one of their senior wrestlers, Zach Cannistra, earlier this month.
For the majority of the match, B-CC was leading after a crucial pin (six points) by senior captain Ethan Makle and significant tech falls (five points each) by the Deschene brothers: senior caption Nizhoni and sophomore Kanik.
Out of the final six Barons in the dual, three were pinned by Damascus, and one had to forfeit due to an injury that ended his match. As a result, the Swarmin’ Hornets earned a total of 24 points added to their team score. The Barons finished strong with a pin by freshman Nick MacWilliams and a tech fall by freshman Enrique Herrera, but it was not enough to come back.
“We all need to technically improve our individual strengths and apply them in our matches,” Kanik Deschene said. “We also need to improve our understanding of the game to know what to do in every situation against our opponent.”
