Last season the Barons went 2-3 beating both their rivals, Walter Johnson and Walt Whitman. In the playoffs, the B-CC Bocce team made it all the way to the second round of the Divisional Championship, where they were knocked out by Wootton, losing 12-2. In their final match to determine third and fourth place, the Barons came up short in a tightly contested matchup against Richard Montgomery.
This year, the team is prepared to go above and beyond, getting past the divisional championship and qualifying for the county championship. “As a team, we’d like to build a strong community and go as far as we can in the playoffs,” senior Oliver Feinson said.
In past years, bocce hasn’t gotten the same level of attention as other winter sports such as basketball or track, but this may simply be because most people don’t know what bocce is or how to play it. Bocce can be played as a team sport or between just two people. The goal is to roll your two balls as close to the target, called a pallino, as possible. Each team will roll one ball at a time and once all the balls have been rolled, the balls closest to the pallino are the ones that are awarded points. In order to get the point without touching the pallino, you need your ball to be closer to the pallino than the opponent’s closest ball. If your ball is touching the pallino you get two points and if your ball is near the pallino you get one point.
