The Barons Wrestling team is coming off a great season last winter finishing third in the team state championships. “Last season set us up for so much success this time around,” Senior Captain Ethan Makle said. “Every mistake that was made last year is fixed. Over the offseason, we made lots of small adjustments to the problems we had and it honestly feels like our team is perfect this year. Not to take anything away from last season, winning regionals and having four people place at states, but we have gotten nothing but better.”
The Barons lost a total of five seniors last season including one of the team’s best players and leaders, Seth Weaver who finished second in the state championships in his weight class and now wrestles at Franklin & Marshall College — a Divison 1 school.
The Barons are returning many stars. Makle and Senior Captain Nizhoni Deschene, who finished sixth and second, respectively, in their weight classes in last year’s individual state championships, and sophomore Kanik Deschene, who came in fourth are back. Each of these wrestlers has now bulked up and will wrestle at higher weight classes this year—Makle, 132-lbs division; Nizhoni Deschene, 165-lbs division; and Kanik Deschene, 120-lbs division.
The Barons’ first test of the season will be away against Paint Branch on Saturday, December 7.
