Founded in 2007, Tatte Bakery and Café started with humble beginnings by only selling to local farmers markets. The business quickly took off, however, and opened its first location in Brookline, Massachusetts. Tatte now boasts almost 40 locations.
Tatte was founded by Tzurit Or, an Israeli born pastry chef. Originally a film producer in Tel Aviv for 12 years, Or immigrated to the US in 2003 and founded Tatte inspired by baked goods from her childhood in Israel. Her goal with Tatte was to create a sense of home after she came to the US. ‘Tatte’ is the Hebrew word for Grandmother, fitting with the goals of the café. She continued to develop Tatte throughout the 2010s, and in 2016 Ron Shaich, the owner of both Panera Bread and Au Bon Pain, bought 50.01% of Tatte, helping it to expand and develop as a nationwide chain. Or has since stepped down as CEO but still holds a position as Chief Creative Officer.
In addition to the popular pastries, Tatte has both seasonal and stationary menus with everything from avocado toast to ‘egg in a hole’ to ginger date chai lattes. Ever-growing in popularity among B-CC students, Tatte is always coming up with new innovations and flavors for their food, drinks, and desserts.
The atmosphere of Tatte is another reason it is appealing to people. “I love how it looks inside. The whole place is marble and it’s just very sleek and clean,” B-CC junior Zara Mistry said. With its high ceilings, marble floors and tabletops, and large windows for walls, Tatte is straight out of every social media kitchen’s dreams. This atmosphere, combined with the sophisticated food, makes Tatte a go-to for everything from working and studying to hanging out to simply having a good meal.
One major drawback of Tatte, however, is the price. It is by no means cheap, costing around $10 for a simple breakfast sandwich. The pastries, Tatte’s signature, go for anywhere between $3.50 and $6. One reason for this is the freshness of all the food, as everything is made fresh in the morning and generally sells out by the end of the day.
While there are many delicious dishes at Tatte, some stand out. Misty said, “my favorite is the avocado toast. It’s hard to find good avocado toast that you can get quickly without sitting down that is fresh and delicious, but this one checks all the boxes.”
