As a part of B-CC’s ongoing efforts to improve student attendance, a new tardiness policy was implemented on Thursday, October 27. If a student has three or more tardies for first and fifth periods within a given week for three consecutive weeks, they will be assigned a lunch detention.
Students have expressed their frustration with the policy. “I think it’s ridiculous and I am outraged. A lot of the time I feel like I’m late and it’s not even in my control, whether that be my friends taking too long or a traffic jam,” said senior Teddy Mottur.
Tardies can be easily tracked with the scanning process at the front entrance. A student is given two warnings before they receive a lunch detention. After one week of three or more tardies, they will receive an email about their attendance. After a second consecutive week, parents will be contacted, and a third consecutive week will result in lunch detention.
B-CC administration has made it a priority this school year to address tardiness. “Overall a lot of policies this year regarding attendance or phones have just been a lot stricter than in years past, and I think it’s a strong change from previous years,” said senior Olivia Zaft, adding, “I think that it can be confusing for people if the policies keep changing during the year. I think it’s a lot easier to understand if you come into the beginning of the year knowing what’s happening.”
