As more states and counties around the country are exploring ways to limit smartphone use in schools, several B-CC parents are interested in implementing similar changes. A significant number of B-CC parents have expressed their desire to adopt these healthier habits for students regarding smartphone use during school hours and broader themes around personal mobile devices and educational outcomes. To address these concerns, parents scheduled a meeting on September 30 via Zoom, to strategize how to reduce smartphone distractions and create a more focused learning environment.
B-CC Parent Nick Moshovakis said to the B-CC Listserv, “We believe that stricter limits on smartphone use for students overall – with due consideration for exceptional circumstances – will improve habits, enhance engagement, raise academic performance, reduce risky behaviors and promote safety and wellness.”
In contrast, some parents argue that policy changes are unnecessary. Another B-CC Parent Sandy Nelson replied to a comment on the listserv expressing that some parents do not feel the need to restrict smartphone use, and there isn’t sufficient data to support the idea of an increasing number of parents advocating for such restrictions. These parents express satisfaction with the current policies, believing they are effective in managing their children’s smartphone usage. They trust their children to use their devices responsibly and trust them with the privilege of owning a smartphone.
