The Walt Whitman High School newspaper received “threatening, racially charged and antisemitic messages” on September 26th, according to a letter sent out by their Principal Gregory Miller.
Although the letter did not specify what the messages were, it did say that the school’s newspaper is making alterations to help ensure their students are protected from such harmful content. These changes include modifying the comment and contact features on their website.
“We understand the distress that such incidents can cause and want to reassure you that we are committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all students,” Miller stated in his letter.
Superintendent Thomas W. Taylor sent a community message to families with guidelines on student speech and expression. He emphasized that as the Presidential Election approaches, as well as the first anniversary of the October 7 attack, such resources could be helpful to students.
“For students to be their best in school, their learning environments must remain safe, welcoming, and inclusive,” Taylor wrote in his message.
