B-CC is hosting its annual Homecoming dance — a fall tradition across high schools nationally — on Saturday, October 5. Also holding Homecoming on that date are four other local high schools in Montgomery County: Walt Whitman, Quince Orchard, Richard Montgomery, and Winston Churchill.
As the pressure of making plans builds, the fight to reserve limited party buses and restaurants has become intense. A number of Washington, D.C. landmarks, particularly the Lincoln Memorial, have become popular spots for students to take photos for school dances. With the memorial currently under construction and the various Homecomings occurring simultaneously, this photo hotspot will likely be overcrowded with students this year.
Walt Whitman junior Charlotte Levin said, “Knowing that there are going to be hundreds of kids planning the same things as me and my friends, we have been planning much quicker than usual. We are securing our bus and dealing with logistics much quicker before everything gets booked.”
In addition to the crowded monuments and overbooked buses, there are multiple B-CC sports games and practices on the day of Homecoming. The field hockey team, varsity volleyball team, and girl’s and boy’s soccer teams all have games throughout the day. This is causing scheduling problems for the athletes trying to organize their evenings. B-CC junior and soccer player Noah Keeley shared, “I’m really excited for the WJ game but it has conflicted with my Homecoming plans. I was planning on going to a country club and having dinner with my friends. But now, I won’t really have time to do that.”
The overlap of Homecomings has also caused problems for couples who attend different schools. B-CC senior Zavi Schwartz is attending Homecoming with his girlfriend, a Walt Whitman student. “It’s been a bit hard to plan out in order to get a 50/50 split between what my girlfriend’s group is doing as well as mine,” Schwartz said. “With a lot of communication, we’ve figured it out by just planning ahead of time.”
With Homecoming a mere two weeks away, students are encouraged to finalize their plans to have their best Homecoming yet!
