B-CC Varsity Football came out victorious against the Churchill Bulldogs 20-13 at home in a Friday night thriller. Despite coming into this game with a 2-7 record versus the Bulldogs in their previous nine meetings, B-CC handled business Friday night.
“I know the boys really wanted this win after Churchill ended our season last year,” said B-CC head coach Matt Schwartzback. “We have a few things to clean up, but we’re excited to be 2-0.”
Junior running back Gabe Eisler got the scoring started for the Barons when he broke free for a 66-yard touchdown midway through the first quarter. He would continue to run past the Bulldogs en route to a career-high 127 rushing yards on only 17 attempts.
When Eisler didn’t get the ball it frequently found its way to senior running back Lucas Scribner. Scribner totaled 59 yards on the ground and added another 29 receiving through the air. His longest rush of the game was a 20-yarder he took for a touchdown to put B-CC up 14-0 before the half.
While the run controlled the game on offense for B-CC, the defensive unit shut down the Churchill offense for most of the game. The Bulldogs struggled to put together drives throughout the game, finally breaking through for a score with only four minutes left in the fourth. Safety Jack Nucci accounted for the lone turnover in the game, intercepting Churchill near the goal line with a minute remaining before halftime.
Midway through the third quarter, the Barons’ defense came up big once again blocking a Churchill field goal attempt. Despite starting with a great position off the block, the Barons would not be able to score on that drive.
Following an otherwise quiet third quarter, senior quarterback Danny Hahn pushed forward for a one-yard rushing touchdown to take a 20-0 lead. This would be the Barons’ final score of the game as the clock ticked down.
Churchill was able to string together a late surge, punching in a five-yard rushing touchdown with four minutes left in the game, then adding to it with a one-yard rushing touchdown on the game’s penultimate play. A stop on the Bulldogs’ ensuing two-point conversion proved to be the final play of the game as the crowd erupted in celebration.
“The student section was on fire. They brought the energy and it really put us over the top,” Coach Schwartzback said.
The Barons’ next game will be at home against Poolsville on Thursday, Sept. 19, at 6:30.
