Signs for the Expert Week posted on Ms. Lassar’s window.

B-CC will host Expert Week during the week of June 3-7, featuring adult experts on Monday and Tuesday, teacher experts on Wednesday, and student experts on Thursday and Friday.

Ms. Lassar, science teacher, initiated and created Expert Week and has been working on it with fellow teacher, Mr. Sacks. Sacks said, “We liked the idea of expert week as a slight twist on Career Partnership Day, because careers are often so specific and abstract that they can be difficult to relate to. We also wanted to convey that just having passions is incredibly rewarding, even if those passions don’t necessarily make you money.”

Lassar noted that recruiting experts has been difficult. She said, “People don’t recognize their own expertise! Students who know another language, have lived in another country, have invested years in a hobby, or just have a deep, deep love for a particular reality show would all be great experts.”

Sophomore Sophie Foster will be a student expert in paleontology on Thursday in Mr. Dutton’s class. Ms. Lassar and Mr. Sacks have been extremely supportive, Foster explained, “We had a lunch meeting where Mr. Sacks and Ms. Lassar helped us plan our lesson. So the planning is by ourselves, but they helped us outline.”

Foster has organized her lesson into two parts, a slideshow and a hands-on activity. “Yes, it’s a little stressful to teach a full class,” Foster said, adding, “But it’s something that I love to talk about.”

Students can sign up to be an expert using the flyers posted around the school. Scan the QR code from the flyer or fill out the form here to become a student expert. Students who are interested should sign up as soon as possible. The week promises to be an interesting one, with a variety of classes to enjoy.
