Often people take inspiration from others when seeing certain clothing styles they like, someone doing their makeup in a certain way, wearing a cute new sweatshirt, or even a specific haircut. But has that gone too far? What if you only wore clothes, or did things because other people were doing it too? The pressure to fit in and do as everyone else has had a strong effect on who teenagers here at B-CC, and all over the world, are.
As summer is approaching everyone is starting to build up their summer wardrobes, but not without consulting the internet first. If TikTok, Instagram, and your favorite influencers are telling you that something is in fashion, you buy it, even if you don’t personally like it yourself. The newest trend for this summer is tankinis. When you’re scrolling through social media you see a lot of people commenting on this new trend saying they prefer bikinis and are upset that they will be forced not to wear them. But who is forcing you?
Feeling this need to fit in and only do what the rest of the people around you are doing can often affect people’s individuality. B-CC Junior Fernando Castro said, “I use social media as a great source to find new style ideas but I think there is such a thing as following too many trends because you should focus on finding things you love, not only things other people love.”
So is following trends really always such a negative thing? B-CC Junior Lucy Stone said, “I often take inspo from other people but I see that as a compliment, like I like something they did so much that I wanted to do it too, but I also think people can take it too far, you have to remember to be your own person as well.”
Sophomore Aubrey Green commented, “I don’t think I personally feel any pressure from social media but I have definitely noticed that a lot of kids will see a shirt trending on TikTok and then a week later they are all wearing it, which I don’t think is a coincidence.”
So use social media and the people around you as inspiration but don’t lose your own identity in the process.
