On Saturday, Jan. 13, Girls Swim and Dive came out swinging against cross-town rivals, Walt Whitman, beating them 102-84, while the boys lost to the Vikings 133-53.
The girls won this week by having a well-rounded meet from start to finish. They began the morning with wins in the 200-yard medley, and 200-yard freestyle, which was won by Junior Addison Mostofi. Sophomore Virginia Hinds added to the campaign with 12 points total in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle. Although Whitman kept clawing back, the girls separated themselves with a win in the 500-yard freestyle by Sophomore Hailey Hammond, the 200-yard freestyle relay, and a win by Sophomore Grace Krupinski. To round out the day and seal the win, the girls took the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. Following the meet, Krupinski shared, “The Whitman meet went well, and everyone showed out with excited energy despite not having the best pool and space. Everyone was up cheering on the bulkhead, and it helped the girls win. This win is hyping us up to win our last dual meet against Walter Johnson and go into the championship season strong to pull out good swims.”
Although the boys didn’t take home any outright wins of the events, they had a tough-fought match against the reigning men’s State Champions. Senior Lucas Cheplo came in second for his efforts in the 200-yard medley relay and 50-yard freestyle, along with third place in the 100-yard freestyle.
Both Boys and Girls Swim and Dive teams continue their season next weekend, with the first of two straight meets against WJ. Show up at Olney Indoor Swim Center at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20, to see the Barons take on our cross-town rivals!
