The Barons lost to Churchill 27-13 to end their season in the state quarterfinals, the first time they had played there in nearly 40 years.
Churchill Senior David Avit rushed into the endzone to open the scoring early in the game. Toward the end of the second quarter, the two teams traded punts until Avit scored touchdowns on back-to-back drives, resulting in a 20-0 game for the Bulldogs. At the end of the third quarter, Avit drove in his fourth and final touchdown of the game, completing Churchill’s scoring for the evening. The Barons made some noise in the fourth quarter with Junior Andre Ekani’s touchdown and a recovered onside kick that Senior Nelson Smith used to raise the score to 27-13 with a TD of his own. Unfortunately, the Barons ran out of time, and the Churchill Bulldogs captured their first regional championship in 30 years. They are set to play Broadneck next week in the state semifinals.
In 2024, the Barons will graduate 20 seniors, and with many have been starting for the team for two or more years. Their contributions are greatly appreciated and have changed the Barons’ football legacy forever.
After the game, Senior Quarterback Carson Griffey shared, “All of our seniors and coaches have put in so much time and effort throughout the last four years to get us to this point. To be able to end our careers by advancing to the Quarterfinals and making B-CC history means everything to us.”
Griffey led the team in total touchdowns with 10 this past season, Senior Tristan Torabi led the team in receiving yards, and Senior Nelson Smith led the Barons in total tackles and rush yards. We will all be excited to see what the Barons do next Fall!
