Mr. Verga, new to B-CC this year, teaches English and Theater Arts, and heads up the theater department.
Previously, Mr. Verga worked for two years at Silver Spring International Middle School as the theater head. When asked why he made the switch to B-CC, he said, “I was eager to also teach English and Drama but at a higher level.” He expressed his hopefulness for the upcoming year. “I am really looking forward to the opportunity to come into a program that I can help continue to grow bigger than it is now.”
Mr. Verga has always been passionate about theater, but he explained how the teaching aspect makes it even more exciting. He said, “Getting on a daily basis to connect with B-CC students and watch the creativity they bring into the room is honestly pretty incredible. I look forward to it every day.”
Mr. Koperski, teacher at B-CC, stepped down from his head director role before the start of this school year, noting, “With the addition of Mr. Verga to the B-CC staff this year as the new Theater teacher, it was a logical decision that he also become the new director for B-CC Theatre.”
Mr. Koperski has been a theater director for over ten years, five of which he spent with the B-CC program. Koperski explained that he loved his time as a head director at B-CC. “I enjoy working with the students, whether it is on stage or behind the scenes. We have an enormous amount of talented students here, and it is an amazing opportunity to work with all of them in creating these shows.”
In his time as head director, Koperski made an impact. He said, “I worked to get new spotlights in the auditorium, incorporate visual projections to our musicals, and acquire new body microphones for our actors.” Koperski has taken on the role of Technical Director and continues to contribute to the theater program.
Mr. Verga plans to build off the strong foundation Koperski laid. Mr. Verga said, “Mr. Koperski has been running the program for the past couple of years, and he’s done an incredible job.”
Mr. Verga’s first production with B-CC, The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon, opens Nov. 16 and runs through the weekend.
