At exactly 7:30 am the B-CC student arrives at the school grounds and gets out of the car. Immediately, they grab their small white case that holds the two things that give them the only happiness they will feel in the next seven hours of school. But as they open it up, the worst possible thing that could have happened has happened: nothing is there. Just two empty spaces where AirPods should be.
Panicked, they think back. “Maybe they’re in my backpack? Maybe in my pocket?” They hold onto the hope that they aren’t too far. But quickly, in their mind’s eye, they see them resting on their bedside table at home. The student freezes, sighs, and then regrettably accepts the fact that today is going to be a horrible, terrible, miserable day.
First period is the worst of them all, as the student realizes that instead of listening to early morning EDM, they will actually have to engage in the lesson and listen to the teacher speak. Instead of ignoring the people next to them and pointing to the AirPods when they speak, the student has no choice but to respond.
Next is the six-minute transition between their first and second period classes. Normally, they would turn up the volume all the way as they walk through the halls, but today this Baron hears the loud, annoying chatter of the other students in the hallway. Painful.
Both third and fourth period go okay, because the student has friends in those classes to talk to, but still, they feel unfulfilled without music to fuel them through the hallways.
After lunch, they become desperate, asking around to use one of their friends’ AirPods for just one period. But to their disappointment, their friends aren’t willing to live in silence either.
Their fifth-period class is History, this student’s least favorite subject. While they usually set up their phone and watch The Bear the whole time, today’s 46 minutes goes by no T.V. at all. To them, it feels like the minutes are going by slower than they ever have before.
By sixth and seventh period, this student is craving music more than ever, and they make a pact to themselves that they will never, ever forget their AirPods again.
The second the last bell rings, they run to their car and press play on their playlist as fast as they can. They sigh again, but this time it is a sigh of relief that this cruel day is finally over. A life without AirPods is no life at all.
