B-CC nearly knocked off the heavily favored Northwest Jaguars on Friday, Sept. 29th, in a 14-13 thriller.
The Barons entered the game as huge underdogs. The MoCoShow’s prediction for the game was Northwest by a staggering 35 points. Northwest has been featured in many of the State Championships in past years, most recently in 2021. In the face of adversity, the Barons stuck it out behind a stiff defense and shifty offensive scheme.
After going down by 7 points early in the first quarter, the Barons hung on in the game. The star of the first half was strong defense, with Seniors Nelson Smith and Seth Weaver anchoring the defensive unit.
Following a first half dominated by defense, the second half was more of the same. The Barons kept it close until 6 minutes left in the game. Northwest lined up on the 1-yard line, ready to score. The Northwest center botched the snap, which left Senior Nelson Smith with a clear 99-yard field to pick up the ball and score. Following that magic play, the Barons made another power move. As Senior Jimmy Zamena on Northwest broke out towards the end zone, it seemed like Northwest was going to go up 7 more points; however, Sophomore Gabe Eisler made a game-saving swat of the ball just as Zamena was about to enter the end zone. This caused a fumble and a turnover to the Barons. Towards the end of the fourth quarter, Senior Carson Griffey made it 13-7 with a crucial rushing touchdown. Unfortunately, Northwest found the end zone again in the waning minutes prior to the buzzer, finishing the game at 14-13.
Following the loss, Senior Trenton Denmark said, “Even in a loss, this definitely gives us a lot of confidence to finish the year strong.”
The Barons look to even their record back to .500 on Thursday, Oct. 5th, when they play Wheaton (1-4) at 7:00 p.m. This is not only a critical conference game, but it is also Senior Night. Show up and show out for our Seniors!
