In a close game against B-CC’s infamous rivals, Walt Whitman High School, field hockey battled hard to win 1-0. In an exciting, back-and-forth defensive game, senior Captain Oona Buckley scored the lone goal for the Barons.
After starting with three wins and two losses and following a tough loss to Whitman last year, some on the team questioned whether they would be able to beat the undefeated Whitman squad. The girls answered the call and proved they could play with anyone in the conference. Despite Buckley receiving a yellow card, which pulled her out of the game at the end of the third quarter for two minutes, leaving the team down a player, the Barons held their own and kept the ball out of the cage. Holding a 1-0 score the entire game, nerves were high, but that did not stop Barons from winning this revenge game.
After recording yet another shutout win, junior goalie Abby Schrader commented, “There was a lot of anticipation because this was a big match. We turned that anticipation into energy that we used on the field.”
When asked about what she thought gave the Barons an edge, she added, “Our communication and helping each other out on the field is what led us to victory.”
Looking ahead, the girls play tonight on the road against Thomas S. Wootton. Field hockey looks to improve their winning streak to three heading into the weekend.
Wootton started the season off strong with three wins and only one loss as they prepare to face a hot Barons squad. Show your support tonight at 7:00 pm and good luck Barons!
