This past weekend capped off the start of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Dive team postseason. The Barons took on their first meet of the postseason at the division one championship meet on February 4. Both the boys and the girls’ teams finished with three top-ten finishers. On the boys’ side, the team’s top finisher, freshman Dylan Imirowicz placed 6th and seniors Tomas Minc and Mark Pollin finished in 8th and 9th place respectively. On the flip side, the girls were led by sophomore Audrey Gee who finished 6th, and not far behind was freshman Avery Moffit and senior captain Riley Moffit finishing in 7th and 9th.

The girls’ team played an essential role in the overall second-place finish for the combined swim and dive team totals, keeping them in the neck-and-neck race with Walter Johnson throughout the entire meet. “We were never seeded to beat [Walter Johnson], so the fact we maintained a lead for the majority of the meet was encouraging for everyone,” said captain, Riley Moffit. The girls have worked hard all season long and they can attribute much of their success to the cohesive mindset they hold as a team, “Both swimmers and divers come into practice with a positive attitude that lends itself really well to [our] constant success”, furthered Moffitt. Thus far the girls are 4-1 with their only loss being to Bethesda rival Walter Johnson. Following their mere eight-point loss to the Wildcats at Divisonals, they look to avenge their losses in the coming weeks.

Though the same cannot exactly be said about the boy’s swim and dive combined finish, the dive team has been far from lackluster. Despite a 1-4 regular season finish for the boys, diving has been more than pulling their own weight, finishing third in the dive team totals and scoring 33 points for the Barons. Record aside, the team has been outperforming expectations while being composed of “mostly non-club divers,” which at times can make it difficult to compete with their year-round counterparts. “I’ve been proud of our team’s success,” says boys’ captain Tomas Minc—“we’ve found a way to have fun while performing at a high level all season long and have only improved each week.”

Both the boys and girls look to continue their success this upcoming weekend at this year’s Metros championship meet. If you’re looking to come and watch some phenomenal divers, both the boy’s and girls’ teams will be diving at the Germantown Indoor Swim Center on Wednesday and Thursday at 4:30 PM. Diving for the Barons on Wednesday will be Tomas Minc, Dylan Imirowicz, and Hewitt Grisom. Diving on Thursday will be Riley Moffitt, Audrey Gee, and Avery Moffitt. Best of luck to the Barons!
